Geodiversity refers to the variety of geological environments, phenomenon and process that generates landscapes, rocks, minerals, fossils, soils and othe surface depositsrwhich constitute the base for life on Earth according to the definition of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation in England.
Geodiversity shows some similarities with biodiversity since both are responsible for the planet’s evolution. Biodiversity is constituted by all the living existent creatures and it is a consequence of the biological evolution. Geodiversity on the other hand is constituted by the skeleton that sustains life and it is a result of the slow evolution of the Earth since its appearance.
Geodiversity also shows large amplitude, occurring from the microscopic scale like the minerals to the large scale like the mountains. Every part of the planet has its own geodiversity regardless its size.
The schedule’s diversity of a certain place and the selection of representatives sites of its history are the first step to determine a geological heritage, which will eventually become the base for geoconservation and geotourism.
